Vocalist and composer Vanisha Gould draws from the spirit of icons like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Joni Mitchell while creating a voice entirely her own. Her music bridges vulnerability and strength through heartfelt writing and a modern approach to jazz storytelling that illuminates the interior world of women in jazz – exploring resilience, humor, and truth through story and sound. Her latest album, She's Not Shiny, She's Not Smooth (Cellar Music, 2024), leans into original songs that embrace imperfection and highlight her unmistakable authenticity. A Berklee College of Music graduate who moved to New York City in 2015, Vanisha has become a vital voice in the city's jazz community. In 2023, she received the Jazz Gallery Composition Residency Commission, expanding her vision toward multi-movement works integrating text, voice, and visual storytelling – honoring jazz tradition while pushing it forward with intimacy and depth.
