Flamenco in a jazz club basement makes more sense than it might first appear. Both traditions prize spontaneous invention within rigorous formal structures, both demand intense listening among performers and both build toward moments where technique disappears into feeling. The New York Flamenco All-Stars bring the full experience into Django's intimate room – the percussive footwork, the raw cante, the guitar's rapid-fire falsetas. Flamenco's compás, the cyclical rhythmic patterns underlying each form, functions much like jazz's relationship to the beat: a framework for tension and release, for pushing against expectations while honoring the tradition.
