STEVE TURRE SEXTET

JAZZ CULTURAL / JUNE 12-14

Steve Turre studied with Slide Hampton and came up through some of the most demanding ensembles in jazz – Rahsaan Roland Kirk's band, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente and McCoy Tyner. He has been a member of the Saturday Night Live Orchestra since 1984. Steve is also the only major concert performer in jazz to incorporate seashell horns – conch and others – as primary instruments alongside trombone, an area he has developed into a genuine language rather than a novelty. His sextet draws from hard bop, Afro-Cuban jazz and pan-African tradition. Three nights, with sets at 7 and 9 p.m.
