Organist Larry Goldings, guitarist Peter Bernstein and drummer Bill Stewart return to Smoke Jazz Club August 19–23 for five nights celebrating their new album, Rhombus (Smoke Sessions). The engagement brings the longtime trio back to the Upper West Side ground, where they first played together when the club was still Augie’s. “That’s the same ground where we started playing,” Peter says. “Augie’s was the place everybody came through. You never knew who was going to show up.” The trio will dig further into the newer material from Rhombus, much of which was still fresh when they entered the studio. “The fun of recording is to document where we’re at,” Bernstein says. “Some of the tunes we recorded, we hadn’t been playing long at all, so they’re going to be more comfortable as we keep playing them.” After decades together, the chemistry continues to deepen. “They just get better and better,” Bernstein says. “That’s always a thrill.” - ME
