Jon Faddis has been one of the defining trumpet voices in modern jazz since he exploded onto the scene as a teenage protégé of Dizzy Gillespie in the early 1970s. His astonishing command of the horn—especially his laser-accurate, singing high register—made him a first-call player for everyone from Charles Mingus and Thad Jones/Mel Lewis to seminal studio dates and big-band projects. Over the decades, he’s balanced that virtuosity with a deep feel for swing, blues, and melody, leading his own bands while passing the tradition forward as a mentor and educator. For his seventy-third birthday, he brings his quartet into Dizzy’s Club, a room literally built in his mentor’s shadow, perched above Columbus Circle with the city lights as backdrop. Expect a program that moves between bebop burners, luminous ballads, and tributes to Dizzy and other trumpet giants, delivered with Jon's trademark combination of precision, humor, and exuberant joy.
