JAMES CARTER QUARTET

BETHANY BAPTIST - JAZZ VESPERS / MARCH 7

New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC)’s TD Jazz Series welcomes famed saxophonist James Carter to the Bethany Baptist Church Jazz Vespers. James will be joined by his formidable quartet: pianist Sharp Radway, bassist Hilliard Greene and drummer Kahlil Kwame Bell. The New York Times calls James “one of the most charismatic and powerful soloists in jazz.” Whether on tenor, baritone, or soprano sax or bass clarinet, James always shines with his sweet, classic, melodic tone and inventive playing. The Detroit native has been releasing albums as a leader since the early ’90s, including the terrific Conversin’ With the Elders (Atlantic) and In Carterian Fashion (Atlantic). James mixes bop, free jazz, Dixieland and other styles into his fusion. A welcome early show for some jazzheads: 6:00 PM start. DJP
