CHARLES MCPHERSON QUINTET
DIZZY'S CLUB / JULY 17-19
.jpg)
Dizzy's is billing this as an eighty-seventh birthday celebration for McPherson, an alto saxophonist who has been playing at the highest level since the 1960s—he was a member of Charles Mingus's working bands for nearly a decade. His bop vocabulary is intact and undiminished, and Charles has long since earned the kind of listening a room like Dizzy's provides. Quintet personnel not listed in advance. Three nights at one of New York's premier jazz rooms, with a view of Central Park, is the appropriate setting for this recognition.
