CAROLYN LEONHART QUINTET | DOWNTOWN NYC JAZZFEST
DJANGO JAZZ CLUB / APRIL 25

Vocalist Carolyn Leonhart brings her flexible instrument and genre-crossing sensibility to the Downtown NYC JazzFest at Django. A singer equally comfortable with straight-ahead swing, soul-infused grooves, and harmonically adventurous material, Leonhart uses phrasing, timbre shifts, and subtle rhythmic displacement to personalize each song. Carolyn’s quintet settings allow her to move fluidly between lyric-focused storytelling and wordless improvisation, sometimes treating her voice like an additional horn. Expect arrangements that recast familiar standards alongside deeper cuts and original pieces shaped by contemporary jazz harmony and R&B undertones. In Django’s vaulted, intimate room, Leonhart’s dynamic control becomes especially vivid: she can float a line just above a whisper, then crest into a blues-soaked shout. The band’s interplay—solos braided with responsive comping—keeps the music in constant motion, embodying the festival’s downtown spirit of openness and stylistic permeability. JZZ
