ANDREW CYRILLE QUARTET

VILLAGE VANGUARD / AUGUST 4-9

Drummer Andrew Cyrille is celebrated for his innovative, melodic approach. Emerging in the 1960s as a key figure in the free jazz movement, Andrew is known for his long tenure with pianist Cecil Taylor's group, where he helped define the sound of avant-garde jazz through the 1960s and ’70s. He has also collaborated with artists such as Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton and David Murray, and led his own ensembles, performing at major venues and festivals worldwide, including the Village Vanguard and Newport Jazz Festival. His style blends rhythmic freedom with lyrical sensitivity, treating drums almost as a melodic instrument rather than purely a timekeeping one. Andrew will appear at the Village Vanguard with guitarist Bill Frisell, pianist David Virelles and bassist Ben Street. DJS
