New Zealand–born pianist Alan Broadbent studied with Lennie Tristano and went on to serve as pianist and arranger for the Woody Herman Orchestra – a range of experience that shaped a harmonic language both contrapuntally rigorous and genuinely lyrical. Alan performs regularly with bassist Harvie S and drummer Billy Mintz, a trio whose shared history gives the music an intuitive conversational quality that takes years to develop. His output as a leader – recorded for Concord, Choice and ArtistShare – includes some of the most quietly authoritative piano trio work of the past three decades. - KD
